Striebel, T.: Ten Years of Cave Registration in Northern Bavaria: the Development up to Now.

Summary

This overview spans ten years of intensive registration work in an area where previously no cave registration took place. During this time, 158 (natural) caves and 220 artificial caves have been registered. The caves now registered are spatially focused on the region in the west of the town of Bayreuth, the southern and western Fichtel Mountains and the Frankonian Forest. The geologic diversity of the area is reflected by the diversity of the genetic conditions for cave development. A considerable number of caves is water-bearing. The level of data associated with the caves in detail is very good. Concerning the artificial caves, there is a main focus on cellar caves and a further focus on mines. Besides, there are some artificial caves of other, mostly very interesting origin.
